Himanshu Jain has dreamed of playing against the best players in the world for most of his life – and it will become a reality when he joins the World Snooker Tour in the coming weeks.

The 30-year-old from Hyderabad, India trained at the Asia-Pacific Q School earlier this month, defeating Kritsanut Lerzattaitorn 4-3 in the final round in Bangkok.

A three-time Telangana state champion, he came close to getting a pro tour card only once before – in 2018, when he lost 4-2 to Ashley Carthy in the final round at Q School. This time, Jain went further and became the first Indian on the main circuit since Aditya Mehta quit the tour in 2018.

“I am proud to represent my country on the tour and I am also proud to be the first Indian player to qualify through Q School,” he said. “Aditya really helped me and during the Bangkok event he sent me messages after every match which was very encouraging.

“It’s always been my dream to play on the professional tour. I was so close to 2018 that I had to put my dream on hold for a few years because of the pandemic. So, when I found out about the new Q-school in Asia and Oceania, I was very happy because I only had a three-hour flight to Bangkok, which was much easier than going to the UK.

“I had a tough draw against Thor Chuan Leong in the first event and lost 4-0 which was disappointing, but I just tried to relax as much as possible going into the second event. I started well and won my first match 4-0 and then lost 3-1 in the next round against Asjad Iqbal. I told myself that I had given him so many chances that I needed to improve my security. I came back to win 4-3 and then won the next game 4-1 to advance to the final round.

“At 3-3 in the last frame, I was down 42 points. I came back and finally got a chance at the last red, picked it up and put it away. There was a lot of pressure on that takeaway, but I just tried to get the ball after the ball and didn’t think about what it meant to win. I can’t describe how great it was to score the last ball.”

Jain started relatively late as he didn’t play snooker until he was 15, but he quickly developed his skills and in his early 20s his learning was accelerated with two spells at the Star Academy in Sheffield, where he was inspired by Ding Junhui. Jain has no illusions about jumping standards from amateur to professional and knows he needs a strong all-round game to survive. When it comes to finding a way to win, he has the perfect model.

“I love playing with Mark Selby, he is my favorite player since he won his first world title in 2014,” said Jane. “I learned a lot about defensive snooker just by watching him on TV. When he played Stuart Bingham in the semi-finals of the World Cup last year, he struggled a lot. But he found a way to overcome that pressure and change the game. That’s what you need to learn to be successful.”

While Jain will undoubtedly have the best experience of his life as he interacts with the best players on the planet, he will be leaving behind a loved one at home in Hyderabad. He describes himself as an “animal lover” and “feeds stray dogs” on his Instagram profile, and seven years ago he adopted a stray dog.
