Win Big With Pinnacle’s Top Online Casino Games – By Michael Muchmore Michael Muchmore Lead Software Analyst My Experience Computer hardware is nice, but it’s not very useful without innovative software. I’ve been reviewing software since 2008 and still get excited to see what’s new in video and photo editing software and how operating systems change over time. I had the privilege of signing the cover of PC magazine’s latest issue, the Windows 7 review, and got all of Microsoft’s triumphs and missteps up to the latest Windows 11. Read the full bio
Pinnacle Studio Ultimate is a fast, full-featured, near-professional video editing application without a steep learning curve. Performance upgrades and new mask, title, and audio motion tracking tools make it more engaging than ever.

Pinnacle Studio Ultimate, now in its 26th Pinnacle, is aimed at near-professional enthusiasts, with excellent editing features and effects such as stop-motion video, multi-camera editing and motion tracking. The company behind the software, Alludo (formerly Corel, which continues to use Corel in some brand names), also makes the consumer grade VideoStudio. Fortunately, Pinnacle lacks the steep learning curve associated with professional video editing software, but in terms of performance and ease of use, it still lags behind our Editors’ Choice winners CyberLink PowerDirector and Corel VideoStudio.
The latest version focuses on stability and performance. According to the documentation, the company has “upgraded the product structure with changes to everything from behavioral logic to resource management to a brand new proxy codec.” In terms of performance, speed affects “startup time, resource usage, interface and responsiveness of project visualization, and import and export speed.” The user interface has been tweaked for efficiency, and control panels offer more control over things like system resource usage.

Pinnacle Studio comes in two tiers with the entry-level Pinnacle Studio listing for $59.99 and Ultimate (reviewed here) for $129.99. An optional Ultimate Bundle adds loads of content and effects, plus membership to Pinnacle’s Studio Backlot online community, which offers training, support and stock content. Prices are for perpetual licenses, with no recurring subscription fees. Upgrades from previous versions of Ultimate save $40 off the full price.
If you need to edit 360-degree or 4K content, you’ll need to upgrade to Ultimate, which also adds color grading, video masking, and high-end effects from NewBlue, along with unlimited video recording. This is the only level that includes some of the new features described here. New since our last update to this review is a free 15-day trial of Pinnacle Studio. Competitors including Adobe Premiere Elements and CyberLink PowerDirector also offer free trials.
Prices are competitive. For example, you pay almost the same amount ($139.99) for CyberLink PowerDirector Ultimate, $99 for the lower-tier Adobe Premiere Elements, and $99.99 for Corel VideoStudio Ultimate. Pro-level competitors cost more, with DaVinci Resolve at $295, Final Cut Pro at $299, and Premiere Pro at $239.88 (annual subscription).

Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11 is required to run Pinnacle Studio and you need Intel Core i3 or AMD A4 3.0 GHz or higher, Intel Core i7 4th generation or higher, or AMD Athlon A10 or higher for UHD, Multicam or 360 video. The software requires at least 4GB of RAM, with 8GB recommended. Note that there is no version for macOS.

To get started, you first download a small installer app, which then downloads the massive full program. It’s more than 2 GB and takes up 3.5 GB on disk after installation, so you’ll want a fast Internet connection and plenty of space on your hard drive. Of course, if you’re editing 4K video, you’ll need a large drive anyway. The installer also separately installs MultiCam Capture Lite, MyDVD, and several content packs that can add a few more GB if you choose the full install.
When you first start the program, you are invited to the User Experience Improvement Program, which sends anonymous usage data to the company; turning it off is easy if you don’t want it. A dialog box then tells you that the import function allows you to save and open media files.
Import takes up the entire program window, making it easy to choose the types of import you need, whether it’s from DVD, computer folders, stop-motion, snapshot or multi-camera. The software can import 4K content, and you can star and tag content with keywords while importing, which will help you find it later. The search bar also helps you find content you haven’t tagged that way, instead of searching for words in the file name.
One option in Import mode is MultiCam Capture, which opens an external application that lets you record your screen along with any webcams you’ve connected or built into your computer. You can use function keys to start and stop recording, and the tool creates individual, synchronized clips that you can add to your project box. It allows you to adjust the lighting and sound sources and in my testing it worked perfectly.

Pinnacle’s editing interface is nice and flexible. It has flat, 2D icons and a black and gray color scheme. The program uses the concept of Project Bins, where you store all the content for a specific film project – clips, photos and sound files, but not effects and transitions. This approach is common for professional-level applications like Adobe Premiere Pro, and it’s a feature that Alludo’s other line, VideoStudio, doesn’t include.
The entire program window is covered by four mode switches: a home icon, import, edit, and export. The first is simply a home screen that offers tutorials (including the excellent Studio Backlot videos), information about new program features, and additional assets and programs for sale. One thing I miss about this site is quick access to the projects you’re working on, something most competitors include on their home screens.
Edit mode uses the standard three-page editor interface, with the source content occupying the upper left quadrant of the screen, the preview window in the upper right, and the timeline in the lower half. If you’re used to having a preview on the left, a handy toggle button lets you move it there without difficulty. The ultimate tier allows unlimited tracks as mentioned earlier. The Plus tier limits you to 24 tracks and the Standard to six. You can change the relative size of the panels, add a video source preview, and switch the movie preview to full screen.

The interface panels can be pulled down and you can change their positions like you can in some other editors like Magix Movie Edit Pro. The preview window contains detailed controls such as jog and shuttle, frame forward and reverse. You can also toggle the preview between source and timeline. You expand and collapse the timeline (either the main one or the one in the preview window) with a smart mouse drag, but I wish there was a mouse wheel option to resize the timeline.

Search and sorting are available for all content, which is more than I can say for some video editing programs, like Studio’s sister app, VideoStudio. Hiding and showing items by content type – video, audio, photo and project – is simplicity itself. It has a huge and customizable assortment of keyboard shortcuts. A useful project notes panel that helps you keep track of work progress (Vegas Pro’s similar feature goes a step further by attaching notes to specific timecodes). You can also choose which buttons you want to show on the timeline toolbar, including Split, Add Marker, Crop Mode, Multi-Cam Editor, and Audio Reduction.
The interface makes no specific allowances for touch input, which I find useful for swiping, changing value sliders, and tapping control buttons. However, swiping the timeline with a finger works passably. The software now fully supports high resolution monitors. Instead of integrated help, you get an online PDF (still better than Adobe’s lackluster web help, which shows information about other products and from non-staff users). Overall, however, Pinnacle’s interface is more accessible than that of some competing video editors.
Pinnacle uses a magnetic timeline, so any clip you drag and drop will snap to any existing clips, and you can turn this behavior off if you prefer. When you insert a clip into another, it splits the original, and a razor icon also suggests splitting a clip. One thing missing is a button to play a selected clip in the timeline at the current insertion point – most editors have this.
The trim mode button (or simply double-clicking on a join point) opens a second preview window so you can see the states of the first and second clips at the trim point. It’s supposed to help with the slip effect and drag clipping, but I’m finding it
